In 1983 Steven Naifeh and Gregory White Smith, recent graduates of the Harvard Law School, created a publication called "The Best Lawyers."

Names of attorneys from each state were listed by various legal specialty. The book is recognized as an authoritative source for both lawyers and clients in finding exceptionally well qualified attorneys to refer legal matters or obtain representation.

Lawyers are selected by a statewide survey of attorneys. Attorneys are not permitted to vote for themselves.
